Garin Nugroho will head the jury for the Next New Wave Competition, a category for Malaysian filmmakers. Each year, 10 films are selected to compete for the Next New Wave Award.
Born in Jogjakarta, Garin Nugroho was a prominent filmmaker of the 1990s film generation in Indonesia and one of a few who were at the forefront of the liberation from New Order-era film industry regulations.
His early films, such as Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti (1991), Surat untuk Bidadari (1994), and Bulan Tertusuk Ilalang (1995), secured his place as Indonesia’s first director to attract serious interest in the international film festival scene.
We asked him exactly how many films he had made, he replied “Feature film 19 , documentary series tv : 30, documentary : 5, essay film : 7, short film : 3. theater live : 6, dance :2, book :5, Installation art : 3”
Among his film titles: Air dan Romi, Surat Untuk Bidadari, Leaf On The Pillow, Birdman’s Tale, Opera Jawa, Under The Tree. His latest work is Memories of My Body (2018).
He studied cinematography at Institut Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Institute of the Arts) from 1981 to 1985 and learned a lot indirectly from the legendary Indonesian director Teguh Karya (1937-2001).
Garin also enjoyed exploring, and would bathe in the Code River fed by the cold lahar runoffs from Mount Merapi; he notes that the sulfur, which was brought to the river by the lava, was good for his skin!
Garin had made films in many parts of Indonesia, when asked how many island he covered? “So many islands : all big islands, many small islands.”

1. Director(s) must be from Malaysia.
2. The short film submitted had not been premiered in any film festival before 1st June 2018.
3. Country of production: Malaysia ( fulfilled by at least three of these: film locations, core team members, main casts, or funding)
4. Short Film Duration not more than 30 minutes, including credits.
