JOYOUS OF RED AND WHITE I 紅白喜事

In 1980s, female rubber tapper face the phenomenon of female inequality. Shu Fang has only two daughters, she was pregnant but didn’t know that’s boy or girl. Because Shu Fang’s belly is round, so her husband’s mother believes that must be a girl.

Director: Sim Seng Hing is 20 years old studying broadcasting in One World Hanxing College, where located in Cheras,KL. “Joyous of red and white” is his first short film. The story of the film is based on his mother’s true story. Before shooting the first short film, He has a youtube channel who named沈成兴, and facebook page,蛇精工作室 to share his video for anyone who interested too. The next short film that he is going to prepare is his school’s graduation work, it also based on true story of his family.

A FLOWER’S EYES I 老師在那裡

Eight students of different ethnic background are learning Mandarin at a tuition class.They are behind in their schoolwork but are learning happily with their gentle, caring teacher in a natural environment. A beautiful bond awakens a pure heart.

Director: Tham Wai Fook is a self-taught filmmaker, started writing and directing short films in 2003 and has now produced and directed more than 10 short films. One of his short films, Xiao has recorded over 3 million views on YouTube. Wai Fook was in charge of Sense Club, a film appreciation club. Also a movie critic, he is the founder and curator of “Beautiful Malaysia” short film roadshow.

Joanne is looking for the grey in a world of black and white, unforgivingly and ironically living a life of excess, in opposition to her initial doctrines. “Doctrine of True Love” explores how we perceive love and the idea of the ideal person.

Director: An aspiring filmmaker and video artist, she explores emerging ways of audio-visual storytelling that engage the senses and provoke thought. She has used different methods and explored different processes in her filmmaking, and constantly searches for ways to experiment with what’s possible for the ‘cinematic’ medium. But she mostly uses the film and video medium to confront her personal struggles and questions, currently exploring themes along the lines of sexuality, gender, intimacy and love.

THE WHEEL

An undelivered letter to hometown delivered to the abandoned house, a tragedy in an unknown corner of the south, circulating like the wheel of life. Inspired by “The Wheel”, a poem written by William Butler Yeats.

Director: Alison graduated from New Era College Drama & Visuals Department(Malaysia) in year 2010, and finished her degree in film making from Shih Hsin University(Taiwan) in 2014.She’s currently a video maker,theatre practitioner and also singer-songwriter of a music duo JacAl Map.Her experimental short film<24/7> and <Faithfully Young> has screened in Germany,Sweden,Belgium,Korea,Japan,Taiwan and Macau.She had been invited to several festivals such as Kakiseni Arts Exchange, Macau Fringe Festival, DongTaiDu Music Festival.Her films  pursue a certain kind of silent accuse, as an attempt to create a naked and powerful segment, and furthermore allowing people to rethink about incidents that happened around them.

WHEN IT’S TIME TO GROW UP I AMAN NAK BESAR?

“Aman Nak Besar?” or “When it’s Time to Grow Up” depicts the story of a boy, Aman and his journey to undergo circumcision. Accompanied by his parents, Aman observes and learns through this special day of him in a seemingly mundane everyday life.

Director: Affendi Azizan, an independent filmmaker from Sarawak, Malaysia. His best achievement was winning the special jury award in 1st Creative Visual Awards organised by Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2012 for his short film called “Buatan Malaysia”. After 4 years, he grab back a seat as a director and direct a short film title “Aman Nak Besar?” the title in Malay language or in English call “When it’s Time to Grow Up”. 

FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN I 一號AH MAY

A 24-year-old young boy breaks up with his girlfriend. That night, he meets a mysterious older woman, Ah May. Ah May’s resemblance to his mother piques his interest and encourages him to approach her.

Director: Jacky Yeap born at Taiping, a small town which looks like Paris, it is a peace, quiet, and slow rhythm place. Jacky moved to Sarawak to pursue his degree. In year 2015, he graduated from University Malaysia Sarawak with major in film making. When he was young, he love to watch Malaysian Drama because he felt that the environment shown in the Drama make it look “very Malaysia”. Then, he decided to visual method to capture “Malaysia” and share it with peoples around the world. Jacky has produced 4 short films, and all of them had one similarity, that is a shot showing [I Love You Lau Shu Lin] is appeared in all the films. He said, all his films must show this shot until the girl see the film.

Di (22), a maid who travelled from Sumatra to work in Kuala Lumpur, takes care of a lonely elder man. She sees KLCC everyday, and longs to visit there, yet she can’t leave her workplace due to the nature of her job.

Director: Lim Han Loong is an aspiring young filmmaker graduated from University Science of Malaysia (USM) with a Bachelor Degree of Communication Studied (Film & Broadcasting). His work “The Way We Love” has been selected as a finalist of Astro New Director Award 2014, and also SKT Short Film Competition, which was recognized as ASEAN TOP 10 in the competition and screened internationally in Beijing. His recent work “1304km: Girl From Sumatra” has been selected as finalist of BMW Shorties 2016.
