In 2000 – 2001, Yuni Hadi, Chalida Uamburungjit and Amir Muhammad started a collaboration called S-Express.
When asked about how the collaboration started, Yuni responded, “Oh no, so long ago. I think Chalida, Amir and I had discussed doing something together as curators, to have closer working ties and also to promote the short films from our countries on a regular basis. It may seem strange but at that time, it was a pretty novel idea with not much being done on the grassroots community level.”
Chalida recalled, “It’s really been a long time. Then We met Alexis sometimes after that when he learn about it, he would like to bring Phillipines in. Then I went to another trip in Italy and I share room with Tintin Wulia so we chitchat about it and Tintin would like to bring Indonesia in since she was showing short film under Minikino at that time. And then Maggie come along with Chinese(not only China) short film at some point. In each country have their own organisation but in Thailand, it is always with Thai Short Film and Video Festival. “
S-Express is an annual exchange of short film in Southeast Asia. S-Express Short Film Program has been running yearly since 2001, was initiated by Yuni Hadi (Substation, Singapore), Amir Muhammad (Malaysian Shorts), and Chalida Uabumrungjit (Thai Film Foundation). A Regional short films program exchange presenting the most outstanding short films production in each countries involved.
