The 3rd Southeast Asian Short Film Festival, SeaShorts had announced their festival date to be September 25 to 29th this year in Malacca. The 5 days event including film screenings, there are also forum, masterclass, workshop, art exhibition and music performance by filmmakers
SeaShorts Film Festival have 2 competition categories. Philippine filmmaker Lav Diaz will head the jury for SeaShorts Award, with 20 Southeast Asian Short films competing; while Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho will head the jury for Next New Wave Award, a category for Malaysian short films.
In the past the jury members including Rithy Panh(Cambodia), Mira Lesmana(Indonesia), Sharifah Amani(Malaysia), Liew Seng Tat and many more outstanding filmmakers from the region.
“For us, the most important things is to watch film on big screen together, “ said the founder and festival director Tan Chui Mui, “It is a gathering for Southeast Asian film programmers and filmmakers, watching films on big screen together, talking about films, getting to know each other and eventually working together. “
SeaShorts Film Festival started in year 2017. It screened 118 short films during the 4 days event in 3 venues in Jalan Panggung, Kuala Lumpur. In year 2018, SeaShorts was held in Georgetown Penang, partnering with Georgetown Festival. 148 short films were shown. A few highlight of the program including a program “My Student Films”, consisted of short films made by filmmakers when they were students, programmed by Jacky Yeap; and special program “Salt Boy Return”, a series of 3 programs on short films about original people of Southeast Asia curated by Gertjan Zuilhof.
